Biography

Jo Jena started playing the guitar at the age of 10 in Berlin ("The Wall" had just come down). What he learned in the first place was guitar playing in jazz, blues and rock idiom. "3 Studies for Electric Guitar" mark a break with that tradition. So the guitar playing presented on this site is informed about a.) (european) electroacoustic music and b) the paradigm of producing music in a bedroom environment, as it can be found in the electronica scene. Still the traces and connections, that were layed and established by incredible guitar-players such as John Mc Laughlin, Robert Fripp and Allan Holdsworth can be seen. In
J.J.´s opinion it is important to keep their musical and technical ideas in mind and try to help transforming them into the future.

J.J.´s music emerges from the tension as well as the intermediation of two opposite sites: The first steming from the world of electronic music with focus on ambient textures and soundscaping. Computergenerated stochastic processes and Granular Synthesis are just two interesting fields, that allow the exploration of new musical horizons. Concerning the second one, from time to time he tends to come back to the (acoustic) guitar and then finds himself in front of that tonal, well -tempered instrument, incorporating older traditions and historic manifestations: So on the one hand, you might want to download more electronic pieces such as "hot air" (1999), "instauration" (2000), "drones I - IV" (2004) and "scapes and experiments" (2005). On the other hand site you can find works, that are traditionally played (sometimes using overdub techniques) and have a more rhythmic character: "3 Studies for Electric guitar" (1999), "rhythm I - IV" (2004) or "4 pieces for acoustic guitar" (2005). J.J. was thinking a lot about converting to ONE of this sites entirely, but it is the objective tension of BOTH sides at a time, that in his oppinion led to the development of the musical ideas presented in here:
